Not just legs

When I first qualified as a Sports and Remedial Massage Therapist in 2013, I worked on training nights for Tonbridge AC. It was here that I first learnt to really distinguish between various tight and weak muscle groups and to recognise conditions such as runner’s knee, Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Eight years later, having also trained with myofascial therapy, I now realise that the leg is not just the sum of its parts, but is attached to the rest of the body (incredibly!), and that the body functions as an interconnected whole.

I now regularly treat a huge variety of musculoskeletal problems, such as lower back pain, neck and shoulder issues (including frozen shoulder), stiff hips and various other mobility issues.

Increasingly more prevalent in my clinic are people with chronic pain conditions such as headaches, migraine, fibromyalgia and osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.

So what’s my approach?

The combination of sports massage and myofascial techniques is, in my opinion, invaluable. The first allows you to give a deep, effective treatment of musculoskeletal issues, breaking up adhesions in tissues and stretching muscles to regain full range of movement in joints.

The myofascial techniques are a little more subtle and allow you to work holistically, calming down the nervous system and working the body as a whole. Chronic pain and stress-related conditions (including headaches) really benefit from a myofascial approach.

Regarding which technique for which condition, I could draw an analogy with a workman and a tool belt: it is the case of selecting the right combination of tools for the right job (although I would not rate my electrical or plumbing skills!). As with any DIY task, most jobs require a variety of tools.

Since the days of legs at Tonbridge AC, my repertoire and knowledge have grown hugely, but I never stop learning and I love the fact that each client provides a unique set of challenges, requiring a tailored approach. I am looking forward to seeing what the Autumn brings.
